FAQ: How does the Quest know what the altitude is?

The Quest has no hardware altimeter inside, unlike some other GPS receivers. It gets the altitude information from the satellite, which is based on a mathematical model of the earths surface. The vertical precision is also less accurate than the horizontal precision, because of the way how GPS works.
