FAQ: What if there is no accurate Garmin map for xxxxx?

Garmin buys maps from major map vendors, like Navtech, Teleatlas and governements. But there are areas of the world where there is no accurate map available. Garmin sells the MapSource Worldmap, a crude map of the entire world... but it has the same accuracy as the basemap.

There are also a number of other companies who have created Garmin loadable maps for their country. They have licenced the Mapsource technology from Garmin. Details can be found at Third-Party MapSource Developers.

If no accurate maps exist at all for an area, you can always create your own. How this is done is beyond this FAQ however, but look for Oziexplorer, Mapdekode and/or GPS Trackmaker. You can see my own (and some others) map creation results at my Garmin custom maps page.
