HOWTO: update from Euro City Select 6 to 7, with not enough harddisk space to do it normally

Okay, you decided to update from European City Select version 6 to version 7. But the three CD's won't fit onto your harddrive... This HowTo tells you step by step what to do, to replace version 6 by version 7. =8-)

You can also use this HowTo remove version 6 after you installed version 7, while having plenty of diskspace. Just follow the HowTo, but skip the "install version 7" part. =8-)

First, you need to know a few things, read this carefully:

  • you will need basic computer knowledge to do this, if there is anything you don't understand or anything you feel uneasy about... don't perform this HowTo but ask someone who is skilled. All of this is done at your own risk! Read the complete HowTo before doing anything! Then read it again to make sure you understand every step. =8-)
  • you need to have both the version 7 CD's and a version 7 unlock code. The unlock code needs to match your GPS. This HowTo assumes you already have the 25-digit unlock code for version 7 (which you can get by logging into the Garmin unlock page with the customer code from the yellow piece of paper you found inside the GPS box)  and that you have entered it into Mapsource already.
  • this HowTo assumes you have a fully working European City Select 6 on your computer, from which you can upload maps to your GPS. It also assumes you installed it into the default C:\Garmin directory.
  • you need about 500MB of additional free space on the C: drive to install European City Select version 7 by using this HowTo. This assumes you now have all regions from version 6 installed and will install all regions from version 7.
  • if anything goes wrong perfomring this HowTo, I can not help you... it will require someone present at your computer to fix things. This is the last time to abort this HowTo if you feel uncomfortable with any one of its steps...

First we need to free the diskspace we need, by deleting all parts of version 6 we don't need for the update to work. After this step Mapsource will not start anymore until we are finished with this HowTo, or reinstall version 6!

  • Open the explorer and browse to the C:\Garmin directory, where you will find all installed mapsource products.
  • Delete the EUROCS6 directory, which holds all the detail maps
  • Delete the files that form the index map: EuroCSv6.img, eurocsv6.mdx, eurocsv6.tdb and eurocsv6_mdr.img.

This wil free about 1,3GB of disk space, which (together with the additional 500MB you needed) should be enough to install version 7 (which takes 1,7GB).

Now perform the update, by loading the version 7 CD1 in your diskdrive and following the instructions on screen. Select all regions you had installed for version 6. This HowTo will not cover the update in detail.

After this step, we have installed version 7, but there still is a part of version 6 present (the part the update needed). Mapsource will still not start at this point. We are now going to remove the last part of version 6 (which is causing Mapsource to fail). WARNING! This step will need you to edit the Windows Registry, which is potentially lethal for your computer! Deleting (or editing) anything other than mentioned below can cause all sorts of serious things to happen and might require a reinstallation of Windows. Again: this is all done at your own risk! Don't do this unless you are comfortable with the procedure. Done properly, the risk is minimal though, I have done this dozens of times without any problems... but I'm a computer expert (at least my boss thinks so). =8-)

  • We are starting the Regedit program (by clicking the Start button, then Run, then typing regedit inside the text field and pressing Enter).
  • click on the little [+] sign left of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, this opens a lot of "folders" under that key.
  • next click on the little [+] sign left of SOFTWARE, this opens a lot of "folders" under that key.
  • now click on the little [+] sign left of Garmin, this opens a bunch of "folders" under that key.
  • next click on the little [+] sign left of Mapsource, this opens the "folders" under that key.
click on the little [+] sign left of Families, this opens a lot of "folders" under that key.
  • Find the European City Select v6 key and click it so it becomes blue and selected. This key in the registry is the place where Mapsource looks for info about City Select version 6, without it it won't know it ever existed.
  • Now delete this key and close Regedit.

Now you should be able to start Mapsource without any errors. European City Select v6 will be replaced by City Select Europe v7.
