HowTo: editing the owner text | There is one screen on the V that is very suitable to replace with the owner text, the warning screen. The text for this screen is in the firmware, one text for each language the V supports (english, deutch, italiano, espaņol, francais, nederlands). So, you first download the latest firmware for the GPS V from the GARMIN GPS V Updates & Downloads page. Extracts the self-extracting ZIP file by executing it. You should have (among others) one RGN file, this is the firmware file. First, copy the RGN file for backup purposes. You might need it to put the original firmware in before you send it to Garmin for service. | | One of the easiest ways of editing the firmware file is MeMap. This HowTo is based on MeMap, but you can ofcourse use any other way you like to edit the firmware (but MS Word and other text editors are not suitable).
First, copy the RGN file for backup purposes. You might need it to put the original firmware in before you send it to garmin for service. After starting MeMap, you first point it to the firmware RGN file to edit. Next you enter the text to search for, in this case "Do not attempt" (the first words of the warning text). | | After clicking on Search, the text is found in the firmware and you can enter the replacement text. You can enter as much characters as the original text is long, MeMap will tell you how much there are left. When you are done, click OK. | | Now, you should click Exit, MeMap now replaces the text in the RGN file and (optionally) makes a backup copy. We now have edited one text in the firmware, the english warning text. But the english text isn't shown when the V is set to another language. So, we now repeat the whole process with MeMap a couple of times until all warning texts are replaced. Note: searching and replacing texts with MeMap without exiting MeMap in between is not going to work... replacements are only done while exiting MeMap. | Here are the texts to search for (from the 2.09 firmware, things might change in later firmware versions... I will add the texts then):
Italian: "ATTENZIONE" and "Non inserite informazioni" Spanish: "PELIGRO" and "No intente introducir" French: "ATTENTION" and "Ne pas essayer" (firmware up to 2.20) / "Ne pas saisir" (from 2.30 up) Engelish: "WARNING" and "Do not attempt" German: "WARNUNG" and "Versuchen Sie nicht" Dutch: "WAARSCHUWING" and "Voer tijdens het rijden" | So, if you want to change all warning screens, complete with the WARNING header, you have to execute MeMap 12 times. The whole process, when you keep the search and replace texts in a file (like I do), should only take a few minutes though. |
