HowTo: create a manual route with via points that follows roadsThis feature is only present in firmware versions 2.09beta and higher.
 | First, press twice to get to the Main Menu. Now scroll to Route and press . | | With New selected, press to create a new route. | | Select Manual and press , to create a manual route. This sounds strange, since we want the route to follow roads and manual normally doesn't. But an Automatic route doesn't have via points when created on the V. So, just believe me for now. =8-) | | We can now select an empty slot and press to find a waypoint as we are used to. | | After creating a route with a few waypoints, we scroll to Navigate and press . | | And presto! The V now wants us to know if the route should follow roads or not! If we select No, the route is created with straight lines... just as usual. But we select Yes and press . | | We now get to select Faster time or Shorter distance, just as we are used to when doing a Goto. Note that we now can't select Off road, since we already told the V we want to follow roads. After selecting any of the menu options and pressing , the V calculates a route that follows the road and uses all via points.
Please note: navigating a route like this should start at location of the first waypoint. Thus you should be at the first waypoint when starting to navigate a route like this or you should enter the current location as the first waypoint. If the first waypoint is not the current location when starting to navigate, the V does not recalculate the route but simply waits until you are at the first waypoint before starting to navigate. | | | Remember that the V can have only 50 via points per automatic route. As soon as a manual route has got more than 50 via points the "Follow Road" feature will raise an error ("Route Error" using 2.12 Beta firmware). It won't even start calculating the route, so probably the software just checks for the amount of via points and immediately raises the error.
This is of considerable importance for people who use or make manual routes (in MapSource) for motorcycling purposes and might want to convert it to an automatic route later on. Most of those routes can easily end up with 200 or more waypoints and thus cannot be converted to a "Follow Roads" automatic route straight away. You'll have to split up the route in pieces of maximum 50 waypoints.
When going on a motorcycle trip you probably do not want to use the automatic routing feature of the V while making the route in MapSource, because the software has got a mind of it's own and does tend to lead you along the bigger streets (not counting the routing errors you might get and despite setting it to "Bicycle" or even "Pedestrian"). Motorcycling is not about "Shorter Distance" or "Faster Time", but about curves, beautiful scenery etc. That's why you start with a manual route most of the time. |
