FAQ: my Quest locked up! What should I do?!?

Okay, your Quest locked up and it won't do anything anymore. Or USB communication fails every time. What should you do now? Time for Quest First Aid

Here you learn how to reanimate your Quest and perform brain surgery... well, okay... not quite, but after reading this FAQ, your Quest will be sound and healthy for 99% of the time. The other 1% needs a visit to Garmin Support...

First of all: don't panic. =8-) This FAQ will probably get you out of trouble in no time.

If the Quest is locked up (and cannot be powered off normally) press (and holdMenu + Power on / Light to forcibly turn it off. This will not reset anything, but you can now test if it works normally after powering up again. If it does, you are done in this FAQ.

If it still locks up now and again, check if you are using the latest firmware version:

You do this from the map screen by pressing  ,  and selecting About Quest

Here you see the Quest is running firmware version 3.50 and audio version 3.00 (which needs firmware 3.40 or better).

Now check the Quest Firmware Archive if there are newer versions and update the firmware if needed. Then test again if the Quest is running normally.

If the Quest is still locking up, there are probably some settings messed up. This can happen if you are using WAAS/EGNOS in Europe, because the service is still in test (while writing this FAQ, it supposed to be out of test Real Soon Now...). It is better to turn WAAS/EGNOS off in Europe for the moment (since it doesn't help while navigating on the roads anyway). Another problem could be that the Quest doesn't accept USB communications to upload maps or download tracks.

You can now do a Master Reset.

Power the Quest down and turn it on by pressing (and holding)  Enter +   + Power on / Light until the Quest asks if you really want to erase all user data? Since a Master Reset erases all settings, waypoints, tracks, routes and custom waypoint symbols (but not loaded maps!), you should consider this carefully. At home, this would be no problem, but on vacation without a laptop to reload your routes this might be a bad idea if the Quest only locks up very infrequently.

After selecting Yes and pressing Enter, the Quest will reset completely and think it is in Taiwan or the USA (one of Garmin's locations).

Leave it outside for about half an hour (maximum) and it will find it's current location again. Or, speed things up by pressing  ,  and selecting GPS Info.
Pressing and selecting New Location will enable you to tell the Quest where it is approximatelly, so it looks for the right satellites. That will speed up the process of acquiring satellites.
 You select Use Map.
And you pan to the approximate location with the rockerpad and press Enter. Now the Quest will take that as it's location and search for the right satellites.

The Quest now is back to it's virgin state, you can upload your waypoints and routes again. if the Quest still locks up, contact Garmin Support.
