FAQ: what are the bugs in the current (3.70) Quest 1 firmware?

Every computerprogram has bugs, MS Windows, Linux, your car's electronics and thus the Quest firmware. Here you will find a list of all bugs that I know of. If you know more, please report them to Garmin and also mail the to me: .

  • While geocaching with the Quest the rounding of the distance above 15 meters is annoying. Up to 40 or 50 meters it is no problem, since you are guided by the compass arrow. Below 30 meters the compass arrow is either too slow to update (logical, since the position is averaged) or does not point in the right direction at all for some time. You thus need the distance to the geocache/waypoint, so you can move around and see in what direction the distance decreases. This is almost not possible until you get below 15 meters and the distance is not rounded, but is shown per meter. My suggestion would to either not round the distance below *30* meters in general or not round the distance at all in off-road mode.
  • There is no way to save the current tracklog into one of the 20 saved tracks (which was advertised on the Quest webpage until after it was released...).
  • The only way to use a track downloaded from the internet (for a motorbike tour as an example) is to rename it to ACTIVE LOG and do a trackback. You can also only trackback the most recent track. This is a clear disadvantage over other units... Is it possible to upload tracks with other names to the Quest and select that track for trackback? See HOWTO: converting tracks into routes and use them as tracks for a nice work-around.
  • While searching an address, there are several prompts that are not translated into dutch (yet): "Search all Countries".
  • The background of the zoom indication and mapsource/overzoom indication remains the land color, even when that piece of the map actually is water. The user would think there was a piece of land there, but ofcourse could never reach it. =8-)
  • Making a U-turn while driving on-route (of an active route) initiates a non-prompted recalculation, even if it is set to ask before recalculating. Going off-route on the same route will prompt as usual.
  • Finding a city and selecting "use best map" uses the.... basemap. Even when City Select is loaded. Changing the setting to City Select will improve things, but is not "sticky".
  • since version 3.30 the mapping between the custom waypoint icons on the Quest and in Mapsource is corrected, but the actual waypoint symbols are not transferred. You still need xImage and some renaming to do this... otherwise you will not see your custom symbols in Mapsource.
  • In Menu > Instellingen > Over Quest : "Sys Software Version" is displayed in English, while "Audio versie" is in Dutch
  • When creating a route and adding more than a few via points, pressing the Menu Button and selecting "Optimale Via volgorde" can work fine or the Quest locks and resets... the route is also lost and displays "Empty". The number of via points it will take varies, so it probably has something to do with the difficulty of calculationg the optimal route.
  • If you try to delete waypoints which are used as viapoints in existing routes Quest will respond by turning itself off and making an automatic restart instead of issuing an error message. Thus, if you want to download a new set of routes and waypoints to your Quest, you should always remember to delete your old routes before you delete the waypoints. (reported by Ole Michael Selberg)
  • When 'Hide above' is set to 'Auto' (in Map Setup, Point tab) for My Locations, the My Locations are never hidden, no matter how much you zoom out. (reported by Vartan Narinian)
  • IF you reach the area which is covered by the naviguide hungary (this seems to be about 10-50km from the hungarian border) THEN the quest kinda internally "swiches" something and it will never again let you use the adressdata of another map as the naviguide hungary again. So if u move back to the area which is covered by the CS or CN 6,7 or 8 you still have only the adressdata from the naviguide hungary aviable and not the adressdata from the CS, CN .... there is no way-around (restart, reset...) and you don't get back the access of this data without reloading the mapdate from the PC. (reported by "abo")
  • the Quest crashes under the following conditions: searching for a location (find-button) AND entering characters on the electronic keypad FAST, i.e. more than 1 or 2 before the quest has finished its update of the matching results data field. There is NO crash if you type the next character after the quest has finished its search results. (reported by Maarten Pyck)
